Global solutions to protect the oceans

Despite everything, the ocean is extremely regulated. Numerous international agreements today define the rules to be respected in terms of navigation, fishing or exploitation of resources because the issue has been of interest and concern for a long time. This is evidenced by World Oceans Day, created in 1992 and celebrated every June 8 to raise awareness of the essential place occupied by the oceans and to ensure their protection. But only 12% of the oceans are legally protected. Everything still remains to be done.

And while waiting for the legislation to evolve further, collections at sea or on beaches are increasing to limit the progression of microplastics in the different levels of the food scale.

On a more global scale, certain countries have also joined forces to implement a series of four protection measures:

• Limit fishing.

• Prevent oil spills.

• Protect fauna and flora.

• Create marine protected areas.

A protected area of this type was created in Antarctica at the end of 2016. There are notable colonies of Adélie penguins, petrels and even Weddell seals, all over an area of approximately 1.5 million km². which constitutes the largest marine area in the world. 5000 protected areas have flourished all over the planet.
